What is Normal?

As I approach "normal" on the BMI scale, I wonder what is "normal?"  I am not ready to stop losing yet.  I have a goal in 17 lbs.  I just wonder what the societal definition of normal is.  I have talked about work before and how we all have worked together (14 of us) for 7 years.  We know everything there is to know about each other and can tell by a look what mood the other is in.  The guys in the office LOVE that we have the same cycle too.  After spending the past 7 years with these people, no one thinks twice about telling you that you have a pimple or a nose hair sticking out.  Sickly there are some that say... let me take care of that!  Back to my story.  The people at work are telling me that I am getting too thin.  I still have a serious stomach on me and my thighs still look like a butt, but they are telling me that I am getting to thin.  I think and think that maybe they are right, but I don't want to stop.  I don't hit "normal" BMI for another 6 lbs.

I don't remember if I talked about the problem that I came across a couple of weeks ago with underwear.  (Not the husband problem)  I am 5'2" and am very small boned.  At my largest, I still wore a size 6 ring (I am working on a 4.5 now).  My mother would order me bracelets in children's sizes and I was morbidly obese.  As I lose, I am definitely getting smaller.  So I went to buy new underwear again and looking at sizing, I bought the smallest size on the shelf.  They fit really well.  So I got thinking that if I lose 20 more pounds,  that would definitely be another underwear size.  What am I to do, I have bought the smallest size they carry at Walmart.  The ladies at work suggested Dora panties, but they are just bitches anyway.  LOL  Seriously, am I going to have to resort to Dora panties??????

"Normal" doesn't exist...except in your own head. I think that normal is where you feel great about yourself--except that may be impossible to attain. We will always be a work in progress. I think you look awesome...and VERY NORMAL! Just learn to be happy with you at whatever weight or underwear size. :)

I cracked up thinking of you buying Dora panties for yourself!
I have tiny finger and wrist bones too...My rings were a size 6 at my highest and they are about a 5.5 now. However that is the only thing we are the same at. I am 5ft6 with bog bones every where else!! lol

I think normal is where you feel comfortable. This has always been about health (among other things) and if you are healthy and happy losing 20 more lbs then do it! These people have just seen you obese. So to see you shrink before their eyes can sometimes be a bit decieving! I am sure they worry for you especially since you've had a rough couple of months! If you get to wear panties like that...pick out some fun ones...like Wonderwoman!

the dora panties are hilarious! i know they make smaller panties bc those stick figure models have to fit into something, right?

As far as normal/BMI, while I have a long way to go, I was thinking the same thing the other day about myself..not only what is normal, but when will I feel normal. I think it really is about being at a place where you can look at your physical self and feel comfortable, happy and proud...who knows at what point that is, but i think it is you feeling it vs. a BMI calculator telling you..

As far as work people thinking you are skinny, that is great! feel great with the compliments but don't let it deter you from keeping going if you are not where you want to be. I am still about 50 pounds overweight after losing almost 100..at work, some people have told me I'm so skinny, getting too thin..i really think it is just the dramatic change and how people are used to seeing you, so they think you are getting too thin...

First of all great job with your weight loss! You really took this seriously and worked it hard. I agree with everyone else and it's more how you feel. You can always find underwear to fit you. Where do supermodels shop for underwear? LOL!

I think you with your Dora pantie and Read's husband with his superman undies should totally get together! (not romantically, obviously!). Keep going until you get to where you are comfortable without putting a number on it! Your doing great!

Hi Heather, I'm new here. I've just read your blog from the start. Firstly, I'm so sorry about the loss of your brother. I hope you have many happy memories of good times with him to help you through the grief. Secondly, I'm seriously impressed - you look fantastic! Your blog been an inspiring read for me two days after surgery. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I'm the same way. I've never been "normal" so I have to rely on others to tell me what I just can't see. I have 14 more lbs to lose until I am "normal' statistically speaking, but I need to talk with my doctor about what he thinks, since my own self perception is WAY off. Once yoknow the answer, let me know!!

What great problems to have!

I realized recently that the extra skin has to weigh something (people have said 8+ lbs.). If that is true for you, than you are as thin as you would be at a normal BMI. That may be why people are saying they don't think you should lose anymore.

Either way, these are not bad problem to have!

So you're petite. The people you work with are bound to say things like "you're getting too thin" when they're used to seeing you heavy. The BMI ranges, while not perfect, at least will tell you if you're losing too much. Victoria Secret sells like XXS panties so you'll probably be alright. You have a small frame and you know your body better than anyone else so I say only stop losing once you feel comfortable where you are.
